Panel One: Cities, Visionary Long-Term Planning China is escaping from its own legacy and now invests, with a very long term view, in its new infrastructure. In parallel, the exodus from the rural areas towards the urban centers is accelerating. The cities are growing very fast, with a number of obvious difficulties, but also the opportunity to invest in the right type of infrastructure, due to that new critical mass. Public/ private partnerships could become more and more an option. However remains the risk of major natural disasters/epidemics, which needs to be talked well before they occur.

Panel Two: Energy Efficiency and Transport China’s rapid growth implies a huge need for energy. Coal does not suit all purposes, petrol generates an import dependency, and alternative energy sources are not yet well developed. It is therefore in the interest of the country as a whole, and of its citizens as well, to optimize its energy efficiency. Transport plays an important role in that context, with a right balance between public and private transport, new types of cars and fuels (environmental friendly). Regulatory measures, such as smart traffic control in the city centers, can also play an important role.

Panel Three: Industry, Logistics & Corporate Social Responsibility Cities can choose to specialize on certain types of activities, for example industry or services, which will drastically change their face. There is more and more an awareness to revisit high energy consumption industrial processes. The legislation will also introduce more standards for a healthier life. The logistics has become an inherent part of the production/ distribution process. Control of CO2 emissions already is an important political topic. And now that companies play a bigger role in the overall society, Corporate Social Responsibility becomes a priority. Podium Discussion among panelists

Panel Four: Chongqing Environment and Water Protection The awareness around environmental issues is growing, not only in the West, but also in China. As a result, a new legal framework is being put in place, where China is interested to know about Europe’s experience. Advanced technologies can be helpful to achieve both a better energy efficiency and a good environment protection. The water is, in particular, a topic of high interest, for example rural drinking water supply and environmental protection of secondary rivers.
