Dear Participants of the “Chongqing Dialogue on Urbanization”, We wish to extend you a warm welcome to Chongqing. Your participation to this event will contribute to boost the cooperation between China and Germany. During the next two days we shall endeavor to foster a joint reflection on the various aspects of what means a fast, but sustainable urban development. Chongqing is no doubt earmarked to play a pivotal role and a role model function for urbanization challenges in China. All ingredients are gathered here: strong political will to develop the Western part of China, gradual transfer of the rural population towards the urban area, rapid economic growth, need to ensure a good social balance as well as a sustainable development, and even natural disaster prevention. Those are some of the key points, well illustrated through the specific case of Chongqing, but of national relevance, about which we shall talk over the next two days. The idea is to bring together high-ranking officers, as well as experts from both China and Germany, to conduct a joint reflection on those topics, hopefully leading to some concrete cooperation proposals. This high-level event will be mainly driven by the joint participation of Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Deputy Chancellor and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Bo Xilai, Secretary of Chongqing Municipal CPC Committee. Other key note addresses will be delivered, for example, by Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, former German Federal Minister and former Executive Director of UN Environment Program UNEP, Mr. Li Ganjie, Vice Minister, Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration, Dr. Frank Appel, Member of Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business and Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Post World Net/DHL, as well as several other Chinese and German speakers. There will also be five panels, which will address specific topics in an interactive way. In general, the panels will last about one hour, i.e. 40 minutes of initial statements and interactive discussions among panelists and 20 minutes Qs&As with the audience. The topics will be as follows: ○ Panel One: Cities, Visionary Long-Term Planning ○ Panel Two: Energy Efficiency and Transport ○ Panel Three: Industry, Logistics & Corporate Social Responsibility ○ Panel Four: Chongqing Environment and Water Protection ○ Panel Five: Clean Production with a Focus on Heavy Chemical Industry An extensive media and PR program is to ensure a wide coverage of this conference, at regional, national and international level. Under the banner of the joint initiative “Germany and China – Moving Ahead together”, patronized by Chinese President Hu Jintao and the German Federal President Horst Köhler, the “Chongqing Dialogue on Urbanization” should be the starting point of a series of expert forums on sustainable urbanization throughout the country. We hope that you will take full profit from this conference and remain at your disposal to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
